Pôle Européen de Plasturgie

PEP is the French plastic injection moulding technical centre. Created in 1990 by the major French plastic converters, PEP employs 57 plastic specialists including 18 researchers. Equipped with advanced technology (state of the art injection machines, metal laser sintering technologies, compounding machine, chemical laboratory, fully equipped design centre, extensive plastic information centre), its mission is to increase the competitiveness of the plastic industry by innovation and high added value services.PEP covers the full industry value chain with its four business units: plastic materials, design & simulation, Process & mould, training & information.The R&D department represents more than 50% of PEP’s activity and is organised around 4 major specialties: Ecopolymers, Plastronics, Innovative moulds and Process control (instrumentation).Key experience for this project includes data acquisition for process control; development of software that has proven useful in industry; use of plastic simulation software; and running of mould trials.


Proplast-Consorzio Per La Promozione Della Cultura Plastica

Proplast is a Research & Development body focused on applied research and pilot-scale demonstration activities in the field of polymer processing. Proplast is composed of an industrial consortium which includes 180 enterprises (among them: Solvay Solexis S.p.A., Ferrero S.p.A., MAIP, LyondellBasell srl, Bayer srl) and the major Italian plastics industrial associations. The activities are also supported by a network of 13 academic institutions. Proplast started its activity in 1998 with the main aim to create a multidisciplinary group able to manage research and training activities at the service of the plastic industry. Services include: laboratory testing, performs and bottle testing, product design, process optimisation, education at all levels, continuous training and applied research. Experience and skills relevant to this project include: design and production of rapid moulds; rapid prototyping models; simulation of moulds, products, mould fill and flow; and process optimisation.


Kunststoff Institut Luedenscheid

The Kunststoff-Institut Lüdenscheid für die Mittelständische Wirtschaft NRW GmbH (K.I.M.W.) is a private institute that is allied with the Applied University of Sciences Südwestfalen. The main share holder is an association with over 150 European companies. Since 1998 the institute has been working in all fields of plastic industry with a main focal point in the injection moulding technology. KIMW currently employs a staff of approximately 56 people from various fields of expertise: engineers, technicians, chemists, master craftsmen, secretaries and trainees. The Kunststoff-Institut Lüdenscheid provides support with the selection, development and optimisation of products, moulds and processes in all areas of plastics technology. To do that KIMW uses the following facilities: eight different injection moulding machines; Kistler Dataflow software; KIMW’s own developments in the area of documentation of machine settings; related measuring equipments; material pre-treating equipments; and a complete material testing laboratory of produced moulded parts.

Fundacio Privada Ascamm

The Ascamm Foundation operates a leading-edge technology centre located near Barcelona (Spain), providing services in the processing of plastic, metal and special tooling. The main activities of Ascamm Foundation are the following: Research & Development Projects, Product & Process Engineering, Specialised Technical and Professional Training, Technology Transfer and International Co-operation Projects. Ascamm has 7 units of knowledge: Plastic Product Processing, Manufacturing & Materials, Knowledge Engineering, Light Alloys Processing, Automation & Machinery, Product Development and Nanotechnologies. Complementing all of them, the Centre has also the Innovation Management Department and the International Projects Unit. Experience relevant to this project includes: extensive mould tests which have resulted in the first industrial validated case-based reasoning system for injection moulding; development of software and standards for mould design, manufacturing and application; and research activities around the use of sensors embedded in moulds (intelligent moulds). Experience gained in the coordination of the Emold (FP6) project will greatly contribute to the success of Mold4ProdE.

Fundacion Tekniker

TEKNIKER is an industrial production and design centre focused on Mechatronics, Manufacturing Technologies and Microtechnologies. As a private, not-for-profit foundation it aims to help the industrial sector to increase its innovative capacity by means of generating and applying technology and knowledge in order to be more competitive. Its areas of specialism include: designing consumer and industrial products; solving problems relating to friction, wear and lubrication; incorporating information technologies and communications in the plant; and high precision, miniaturisation and micro/nanotechnologies. TEKNIKER works closely a range of industrial manufacturing sectors that have emerging technologies, such as energy, aerospace, biomedicine, machine tools, auxiliary automotive industry and key scientific installations.


Smithers Rapra

Smithers Rapra provides services for the polymer industry and industries using plastics and rubber in any component, product or production process.
Its technical expertise includes materials selection and applications support, product design and development, manufacturing process development, fault and failure diagnosis and testing and analysis. An extensive Polymer Information Centre, known as iSmithers, complements these technical resources. At the core is the 'Rapra Polymer Library', the world's largest information database dedicated to plastics and rubber. Smithers Rapra produces a range of publications including Journals, Technical Handbooks and Updates. It runs an extensive programme of short technology-based training courses covering materials, product design, processing techniques and environmental considerations and organises regular international polymer conferences.

Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1

Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is one of the largest Universities for science, health and technology in France with 36 000 students and 2630 faculty members. The University has 86 state funded research units working mainly in three fields; health, environment and material technologies. The University is committed to more than 80 European Union projects and participates actively in The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). Lyon 1 awards 350 doctorates a year to students at the outcome of their research studies, conducted in the University’s laboratories, in cooperation with partner industries or other educational establishments. Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 is a multidisciplinary University specializing in both fundamental and applied research and as such it can boast more than 4415 internationally published articles and 44 patents per year.

Compose (previously.Cogemoule)

Compose was founded 41 years ago and is now one of the largest mould makers in France, with 85 staff, including 10 in the design department and more than 60 in production. Compose specialises in medium to large scale moulds primarily used for processing plastics and composites through injection moulding, injection compression moulding, blow moulding, extrusion, RTM, lay-up etc. It has been working primarily with the automotive industry helping to produce exterior parts (like, fenders/bumpers), but over the last five years has have developed out activities to include electrical goods, railway applications, and for the sports and leisure markets. Compose has always considered innovation to be its primary target and so it added an R&D department in order to implement new technologies like laser sintering, hard surface treatment and reducing cooling times to provide an advantage over low cost moulds. Its next key focus is implementation of high value nano-structured surface treatment into the moulds.

D.M.M. Duthel Maintenance Moule SAS

DMM is a mould-making company that was established over 20 years ago. Its key activities include the manufacture, repair, modification and testing of moulds from 3T to 50T for the thermoplastic and thermoset industries. Based in France, DMM has a staff of 33 people.
DMM can test and make pre-production parts of all of its injection moulds through use of the facilities at PEP in Oyonnax, where it can access 10 injection moulding machines ranging from 140T to 2200T.


DPH International

DPH International is a specialist technical mould manufacturer. The moulds are for plastic parts made of high performance materials (like PEEK, PEI, PPS, PPA, PBT, PSU and LCP) processed using several kinds of technologies, like 2 or 3K shot, stack mould, insert overmoulding (with inserts made of steel or glass), micro injection and moulds for silicone. DPH uses laser sintering technology to improve tool productivity with cycle time reduction and also to improve plastic part dimension and geometry.
The company is able to manufacture prototype, pre-serial and serial moulds from 1 to 48 cavities with a weight of up to two tons and at sizes 1000/500/500. Primary fields of activity are medical, cosmetics, automotive, electrical and construction. DPH often makes use of pressure sensors in tools in order to optimise and check plastic part quality during production.


MOPLA srl was founded in 1979 in the north west of Italy. Its main activity was the moulding of gears and other components for water meters. Over the years its primary activity has evolved and MOPLA is now a mould maker and also carries out the moulding of technical thermoplastic parts. Key fields are now water meters, automotive, agriculture and electromechanical items.




Established in 1972 by Gianni Bodda, Fondstamp designs and manufactures plastic injection moulds and aluminium die casting dies, along with a plastic injection mould production plant. Materials used include Polyethylene (low density and high density), Polypropylene, ABS, Acetal (POM, POM-C), Polystyrene, Polyamides, Acrylic, Polycarbonate, PPS, PBT, Thermoplastic elastomers like (SEBS, SBS, TPU, TPEE, TPE, TPV, TPO). These are used to make a wide range of parts for automotive applications, electronic goods, construction, household goods, sports applications and toys. Technologies utilised include: mould designing with CAD CAM systems; cavity and electrodes manufacturing with high speed milling; cavity manufacturing with high electroerosion; high quality surfaces polishing; mould testing; 3D controls. Key areas of speciality include: overmoulding of plastic and metallic parts; aesthetic part production; and grained parts production.

Polyoptics Gmbh

Polyoptics GmbH, based in Lüdenscheid, Germany, is a high-tech company expert in meeting the highest demands in precision imaging optics.
The company is comprised of a team of specialists with backgrounds in Physics, Ultra-Precision Tooling, Metering, Production and Coating. Polyoptics' core competence is the management of the ambitious and challenging process chain that’s required to produce ultra precise injection moulding parts for new emerging markets such as optics, LED lighting, sensors, cameras, medical and automotive.


Klaucke & Meigies Formenbau GmbH

Klaucke & Meigies Formenbau manufactures high-precision injection moulds for the automotive, Electrical and IT industries. Its highly motivated and qualified team have many years of experience of advanced production technology, so KM-Formenbau offers a flexible, highly efficient service. Major achievements include Tool of the year award 2006 (for Excellence in Production), being Certified ISO 9001 since 2006 and this company is also a founding member of the Wergzeubauträgervereins Südwestfalen (2010).


Formenbau Wolframm GmbH

Formenbau Wolframm GmbH was founded in 1973 by Mr. Karl-Hermann Wolframm. The business rapidly outgrew its premises and in 1978 moved to an advanced production facility in the Kierpse Industrial Sector, where it has been able to specialise in the manufacture of high-precision injection moulds for the electronic, medical, information technology, automotive and other consumer industries. The company has been ISO 9001 certified (041006430) since 1996 and since Mr Roman Reichenbach took charge in 2002 the company has continued to develop through investment in key equipment and personnel, to ensure continued customer satisfaction.



Founded in 1974, Matrix specialises in the designing and manufacturing of high precision injection moulds and dies. It offers complete solutions for all its customers’ needs and requirements. Based in Ripoll, near Barcelona, Matrix has 65 highly qualified and experienced technicians. It has constantly been involved with emerging, high-end technologies which has enabled the company to develop new solutions in its injection moulds and dies. Matrix’s core business is the design and manufacture of multi-cavity, stack moulds, bi-injection, bi-component and assembling moulds. The range of products varies from items with pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications to automotive parts, writing implements, flip-top closures, dispensing systems and thin wall parts.



Moldelan belongs to the Goizper Group, located in Antzuola, Gipuzkoa. The company is dedicated to the manufacture of precision moulds for plastics injection. 



MECANOPLASTICA is a leading company in designing and manufacturing medium and large sized injection and compression moulds. It specialises in high added value and high performance moulds.
Since it was established in 1962, MECANOPLASTICA has been supplying to some of the most prestigious European companies producing automobiles, computer equipment, electrical equipment, furniture and more. This has been possible thanks to its high quality in both, design and manufacturing stages, its competitive prices, the strict fulfilment of the agreed lead-times and the involvement of all personnel in the company.

In order to offer a complete range of services to its customers, MECANOPLASTICA has developed the following four main lines of activity: engineering service and technical support; in-house manufacturing of moulds, up to 50 tons in weight; management of subcontracted moulds of small and medium size (LCC); and repair and maintenance service of moulds in production.



SISE specialises in the manufacturing of equipment to control the plastic injection process. Established in 1971, the company is based in Oyonnax in the “Plastics Valley” in France and has 60 members of staff, including 15 in the design department. SISE works in close partnership with its customers in order to provide them with the best service in relation to the plastics injection process. SISE manufactures Hot Runner Controllers, Valve Gate Controllers, Temperature Control United and Data Acquisition & Control Systems. It also provides solutions for Production Monitoring. SISE will be providing key Data Acquisition & Control Systems for the Mold4ProdE project.


Plastic Omnium

Plastic Omnium Auto Exterior is active in the market of automotive components, supplying a wide range of modules. POAE designs and produces bumpers, wings and body modules (front end, rear tailgates).
It supplies custom-made and multi-material solutions with high added value, whilst focusing on innovation and safety. 

POAE designs and delivers innovative solutions that respond to the challenges of pedestrian safety and lower vehicles weight. Expanding the portfolio of environmental friendly technologies and developing low-cost solutions for emerging markets represent two powerful strategic priorities.
With more than 45 facilities and 15 R&D centres, Plastic Omnium Auto Exterior is the worldwide leader in plastic auto exterior parts and body modules for both car and truck businesses.
The Industrial Innovation department is in charge of all projects dealing with industrial innovation for car and truck businesses, from the raw material to the supply chain through plastic processing, tooling, painting and assembly.
POAE uses injection (Thermoplastic) or compression (thermoset) machines, Paintshop and 3D metrological bench.


NP Poschmann

Established over 50 years ago, Poschmann stands for high levels of expertise and competence in both thermoset and thermoplastic production. It is a specialist in the development and design of functional plastic parts for industrial functions. Central to its success, Poschmann excels in in-depth understanding of the application, high level of technological competence and excellent understanding of materials. There are a number of different outfits in this group, formerly known as: - Christophery Kunsstofftechnik/Brilon, Interplast/TychyPL, plasti méca/AngersFR and Poschmann industrie-plastic/Lüdenscheid. These organisations have been part of the Poschmann Union for some time but as of the start of 2011 they are all now trading under the name of Poschmann. This company is all about passion and dedication to the development of outstanding solutions and handling of difficult challenges in plastics. In particular, its know-how in the production of "Fluid Guiding Systems" is market leading.


Goizper S. Coop

GOIZPER was formed as a co-operative in Antzuola, Gipuzkoa in 1959 and currently employs around 200 people. The company specialises in two primary product lines: sprayers for agricultural and garden use; and components for power transmissions. The company has two autonomous divisions to manage these separate product lines. Goizper has been ISO-9001:2000 certified since 1995. 



Nuova Itea was formed in 1994, operating in automotive components and recently specialised in moulding, tampographing and assembling of car ashtrays and car air diffusers.




Lyon Ingénierie Projets

Lyon Ingénierie Projets (LIP) is a subsidiary of the University of Lyon, dealing with collaborative research projects set-up and management. LIP' s staff has more than 17 years of experience in research promotion and innovation management. LIP has extensive experience in project preparation including: preparing and submitting proposals for funding; drawing up the technical work plan in close collaboration with the coordinator; creation of the partnership; advising on funding schemes and establishing the project budget; defining the consortium management rules; assisting with the intellectual property management; preparing the Consortium Agreement; and negotiating with the European Commission. Furthermore, LIP’s experience in project management includes: being a permanent contact point for the coordinator and all the partners; managing and following-up of administrative and financial tasks; following-up of the project expenses and tracking of any deviations; report synthesis; notifying of due deadlines to the consortium; organising of the meetings; and following-up of IPR rules.

Project Objectives

Mold4prodE aimed to develop and assess a method which would give tool makers the opportunity to design and deliver more quickly 'turn key intelligent' tools to end users.
